"It takes a tremendous amount of energy and resources to put on a musical production," John Chalstrom, superintendent, told the board.
In past years, the high school has teamed up with the Cherokee Community Theater to produce musicals. This will be the second year in a row that WHS has done a musical production on its own.
Chalstrom said that after this year, the district should produce musicals in house but only every other year. There will continue to be non-musical drama department productions every year.
Last year WHS put on the musical "Guys and Dolls." This year there will be performances on Nov. 17, 18 and 19 of "Oliver."
The school board also acted to request a waiver from the state to allow the next school year to start before Sept. 1. This is a routine matter that Chalstrom said all but a few districts in the state do every year.
