Bessie E. Carlson, 81, of Cherokee, died on, Nov. 1, 2006 in the Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church, rural Meriden. Pastor Clint Hogrefe and Pastor Merle Wester will officiate. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery, rural Meriden. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. at the Church on Nov. 4.
Visitation will be on Friday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The family requests that memorials be made to the Hidden Acres Christian Center in Dayton.
Carlson was born Jan. 19, 1925 in Paullina, to John and Elisabeth (Nissen) Karstens.
She graduated from Calumet High School and attended Morningside College. Bessie had worked as a secretary at the Farmer's Coop Elevator in Paullina for a few years. She was married to Carl Melburn Carlson on Aug. 12, 1946 in Paullina. Bessie and Melburn farmed near Cleghorn until 1968 and also near Paullina, retiring in 1997 and moving to Cherokee.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband on June 7, 2005.
She is survived by three daughters: Karen Eby and her husband William of Panora; Betty Egger and her husband James of Cherokee; Ruth Reusch and her husband Randy of Quimby; 7 grandchildren: Janell Eby of Ames; Denise Quan & husband Tuan of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; Jamie Sump & husband Dana of Grimes; Lori Anderson & husband Dave of Allen, Texas, Stacey Zwiefel & husband Darren of Cherokee; Kelly Reusch & wife Trish of Washta; Chad Reusch of Quimby; 14 great grandchildren; one sister Alice Straub and her husband Kenneth of Paullina.
