STORM LAKE - Katie Ebel, a 2005 graduate of Washington High School, is a member of the Buena Vista University women's basketball team. Ebel is the daughter of Kirk and Lori Ebel of Cherokee.
Buena Vista, which has had a winning record each of the last four years, is led by Coach Janet Berry, who is in her 15th year as head coach.
A year ago, Buena Vista's exceptional transition game allowed the team to lead the conference in scoring. The Beavers also ranked third in the nation by averaging 81.7 points per game. Even though many of the players who accounted for those points are gone, Berry still believes in her club's ability to put the ball in the hoop.
"I think we run the floor well, and we have a lot of people who can shoot the basketball," said the coach.
A strong batch of newcomers mixed with only two seniors and two juniors means that Berry might need some time to find the ideal mix of players to put on the floor.
"I am excited, because it is such a new challenge to try and fit all the pieces of the puzzle together, " stated Berry, who is a five-time Iowa Conference coach of the year selection. "During the early portion of the year, we need to find out what are our best combinations."
The BV squad will open its season in the University of Chicago Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
The Beavers' home opener will be Tuesday against St. Olaf College, and Iowa Conference play begins November 28, against Luther College.
