AURELIA- The Aurelia High School varsity girls basketball team got the season off on a good note here Tuesday night, as they led all the way in beating Cherokee County rival Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, 47- 31.
The Bulldogs, who led 22-17 at halftime, were led by senior Kristine Munden, who scored 22 points on seven field goals and 8 for 12 free throw shooting. Junior Leah Kai hit five buckets for her 10 points. Munden also led the Bulldogs in rebounding with 11 caroms, and fellow senior, point guard Emily Sonksen, dished out five assists. Kai had five steals to pace the defense.
The Eagles of first-year coach Shane Williams were led by junior guard Samantha Taylor's 10 points. Kylee Dreckman added eight points, and Caitlin Johnson contributed seven.
The Bulldogs made 16-24 free throws, compared to a 7-9 effort by the Eagles. The winners led 29-20 heading into the final quarter before going on an 18-11 scoring spurt that put the game away.
The Bulldogs will face Ruthven-Ayrshire at Aurelia on Tuesday, and the Eagles' next contest will also be Tuesday, when they take on Remsen-Union at Remsen.
