Cherokee senior wins 4th S-O title in four years
SIBLEY - Tyler Halverson's first-place finish led the Cherokee Braves wrestling squad at Saturday's rugged Sibley-Ocheyedan Wrestling Invitational.
Halverson, a state champion at 103 pounds two years ago, and state runner-up at 119 last year, defeated all three opponents in the 130-pound weight class quite handily to remain undefeated for the season.
Halverson pinned Ryan Sawyer of Alta in 1:22 in his opening match, pinned Steve White of Aurelia-Galva-Holstein in 2:30, and won by major decision 12-1 over Justin Truckenmiller of S-O in the championship match.
Three other Braves placed fourth, including Weston Burkhardt at 103, Peter Conley at 189, and Tim Jones at 215. Calvin Conley finished sixth at 135 for Cherokee.
Peter Conley and Jones each won two matches on their way to the fourth-place finish. Conley pinned Tucker Peterson of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in 3:48, and pinned Matt Sfcik of Alta in 2:00, before losing 12-10 to Heath Van Hill of West Lyon in the consolation match. Conley defaulted his first match after arriving late after taking an ACT exam. Jones pinned Luke Dreckman of MMC, lost 9-4 to Jay Kruger of S-O, pinned John Oldenkamp of Sheldon-South O'Brien in 33 seconds, and lost 6-4 to Monte Hickman of MOC-Floyd Valley in the consolation match.
Graettinger-Terril won the team title with 192 points, followed by AGH 179, S-O 175, MMC 140.5, S-SO 125.5, West Lyon 107, MOC-FV 74, Alta 64, Cherokee 56.
