State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald awarded a $500 College Savings Iowa account to Baby Anna, the first child born at Cherokee Regional Medical Center this year. Proud parents are Summer and Jason Heeren. Baby Anna weighed 6 lbs 15 oz and was 20.5 inches long. Anna arrived on Jan. 2, 2007 at 7:03 p.m.

The College Savings Iowa BABY NEW YEAR give-away awarded this special gift to the first forty babies born in 2007, one per participating Iowa hospital. Seventy-four hospitals from all over the state actively participated in the give-away this year.

"While the value of a college education is priceless, the cost of it can be overwhelming. We want to encourage families to start saving sooner rather than later, so they'll be ready to meet the expenses of their children's future education when that day finally arrives," says Fitzgerald.

College Savings Iowa is a state-sponsored 529 plan designed to help families meet the increasing costs of college while providing them with multiple tax benefits. With strong investment management by the Vanguard Group, low costs and additional savings available through the free rewards program UpromiseR, College Savings Iowa is a great tool for parents to take advantage of as they begin saving for the future of their child's education.
