The first session of the 82nd General Assembly convened at 10:00 A.M. on January 8, 2007. The atmosphere, as usual, was festive and up beat as lawmakers mingled and got reacquainted. The political climate in Iowa has changed and Democrats have assumed the majority in both the House and Senate. Chet Culver was elected Governor so that means Democrats will set and control the agenda. This is the first time I will be serving in the minority so that will be a definite change. During the past 12 years I have had the honor of serving as Chairman of several committees, including Ethics and Natural Resources. Most recently, I have chaired the Transportation, Infrastructure and Capitals Budget Subcommittee.
My goal was to put together a fair and honest budget and to treat all committee members with respect. Keeping others informed produced the best legislation and made things run smoothly. I look forward to working with the new majority to do what is best for Iowa.
Governor Vilsack delivered the Condition of the State address on Tuesday and we heard from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Other time was spent organizing committees and establishing schedules.
As the session unfolds Republicans and Democrats will be working together on common issues such as economic development, education, energy, healthcare and the state budget. There will be disagreements and differing viewpoints, but I am convinced we can have a successful session. That is what our constituents expect of all of us. My Committee assignments are Agriculture, Appropriations, Transportation and Natural Resources. I will serve as the ranking Republican on the Transportation, Infrastructure and Capitals Budget Subcommittee.
