SLOAN - Westwood handled the gritty River Valley boys 82-63 in first-round action in the annual Maple Valley Conference Tournament here Monday night.
Anthony Volkert led the Wolverines' balanced scoring with 16 points, while Matt Simons added 15, Tyler Clark 10, and Pat Parcel and Ethan Todd seven apiece.
Volkert also paced the River Valley rebounding with 10 caroms, and Todd pocketed six. Simons, Clark, and Parcel led RV in assists with three each.
The home Rebels jumped to a 22-14 lead with a big first quarter, and held a 53-26 halftime bulge, before leading 66-42 heading into the final frame.
The RV boys sank 26-54 field goals for 48 percent, and were 2-11 from the three-point line. The Wolverines canned 9-16 free throws.
"Westwood shot 8-9 from three-point range in the first half which put us in a hole we could not recover from," said RV coach Dean Norris.
