Champs Halverson, Loughlin; runners-up Conley, Jones advance
ORANGE CITY - The Cherokee Braves advanced four wrestlers to Feb. 17th's Class 2A Districts in Spirit Lake, including the state's top-ranked 130 pounder, undefeated Tyler Halverson.
The four-time state qualifier and 2005 state champion at 103 pounds, Halverson this season sports a sparkling 39-0 record. The senior Brave also racked up his 100th prep career pin at the Sectionals here on Feb. 10th.
Halverson pinned both foes at the Sectionals, including a fall in :43 over Austin Gisolf of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, and a 39-second pin over Steve White of Aurelia-Galva-Holstein.
Cherokee's Nick Loughlin (24-3) drew a first-round bye at 152 pounds, and then pinned Brandon Mars of MOC-Floyd Valley in 2:35, and pinned Tyler Buys of Hull Western Christian in 1:33.
Tim Jones also was runner-up at 215 pounds to advance to Districts. Jones drew a bye, pinned Joey Van Der Brink of BH-RV in 2:31, lost 4-2 to eventual champ Ryan Whitt of MOC-FV, and pinned John Oldenkamp of SOS/Sheldon in 2:43 in the wrestleback for second place.
"It was a very exciting day for us," said Cherokee coach Jason Wood. We qualified four good wrestlers for Districts."
Aurelia-Galva-Holstein won the team title, amassing 218 points to far out-distance runner-up MOC/Floyd Valley, who had 146 points. They were followed by SOS/Sheldon 141, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 141, Cherokee 132, and Hull Western Christian 79.
Class 2A District action starts at noon Saturday in Spirit Lake.
