Holmes' double-double paces Eagles
KINGSLEY - Despite playing some of their best basketball late in the season, the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys couldn't overcome Kingsley-Pierson in Class 1A boys District basketball action here last week, falling 74-68 in an entertaining game.
The Eagles led 16-15 after the first quarter, but then the host Panthers went on a 19-13 scoring run to launch a 34-29 lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. K-P led 49-38 heading into the fourth quarter and, although MMC battled to the end, had enough to sustain the victory.
Tim Holmes led the Eagles with 20 points, while Nate Dammann added 14, and Jordan Boekhout 13. Holmes and Dammann also led MMC on the boards with 10 rebounds apiece, and Holmes had four assists to also lead that department.
"If we could've gotten a couple stops I think we win the game," said MMC coach Al Vasher, whose squad showed steady improvement throughout the season. "We needed to play better defense and shut down dribble penetration.
"Other than that, I was happy with the way we finished our season. The kids played hard and really came together as the season went on. We were playing our best basketball towards the end, That's what you need to do come tourney time to give yourself a chance."
The Eagles finished with a 7-15 record and a 2-7 mark in the rugged War Eagle Conference.
