Cherokee's Nelson a double winner

SIOUX CENTER - Cherokee's ace distance runner Kara Nelson won two firsts, and the Washington High boys racked up one first-place finish and four seconds at the Lakes Conference Indoor Track & Field Meet in the Dordt College Recreation Center here on Mar. 20th..

Nelson, the defending Class 2A state champion in 3,000 meters, won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:31.3, and also captured the 1,500 meters in a time of 5:17.1 on the 200-meter indoor oval.

Nelson's teammate Erica Nicholson placed third in the 800 in a time of 2:37.7, and was fourth in the 1,500 with a 5:33.5 clocking.

Other top finishes for the Cherokee girls included Lynn Carlson's third-place in the shot put with a 34-11 effort, and Alison Husman's fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 14-7 3/4.

"Over all, it was a good meet for us," said Cherokee co-coach Neil Phipps. "We competed and had good efforts, even though we had a small amount of practice time.

Not all of the usual events are run at the Lakes Indoor.

For the Braves, the 4x200 relay team raced to a first-place finish in a time of 1:40.50, with Everson Siegel, Josh Mugge, Eli Ramirez, and Kyle Schuett aboard.

Sprinter Chris Campbell was second in both the 55 meters and the 200 meters, clocking 6.67 in the 55 meters, and 24.61 in the 200. Le Mars all-stater Jared Clement barely nicked Campbell for first in both races.

Also in the 55 meters, Siegel was fifth in 6.90, and Schuett sixth in 6.92.

Andy Dawson also was second in the high jump with a 6-0 effort. He tied the first-place winner, who had fewer misses while also clearing 6-0. Matt Koch was fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5-8, and Kyle Schuck was fifth with a 5-4 effort.

Drew Lugar also copped first in the 55-meter high hurdles in a time of 8.30. Ramirez was fourth in 8.61, and Koch eighth in 8.92.

Dan Bieber was seventh in the 800 meters in a time of 2:19.64, winning his heat in the process.

The Braves' 4x400 relay team was fourth in a time of 3:50.7, with Lugar, Ramirez, Ryan White, and Siegel running. The 4x400 team of Philip Bieber, Dan Bieber, Koch, and Evan Lundell was seventh in 3:55.5.

The 4x200 relay of Lugar, Mugge, White, and Schuett was seventh in 1:45.2. The 4x800 relay of Lundell, White, Philip Bieber, and Nate O'Bryan was sixth in 9:37.2.

Cherokee finished second to Le Mars in the team point standings with 58.5 points. Le Mars had 64, followed by the Braves, Storm Lake 44, Spencer 41, Hull Western Christian 36, Spirit Lake 35.5, Estherville-LC 25, Sheldon 21, and Emmetsburg 16.
