ORANGE CITY - The quality, fast-improving Cherokee Braves track and field squad racked up four firsts and an impressive seven runners-up on their way to the team title of the Unity Christian Knight Relays in Orange City Monday April 16th..
Three Cherokee relays were first to the tape in the rugged competition, and Braves high jumper Andy Dawson continued to soar, winning that competition with a 6-2 leap in the windy conditions.
Cherokee's Matt Koch was second in the high jump with a 5-10 effort, and Kyle Schuett was second in the long jump, as the Braves gleaned 25 points out of the field events despite failing to place in any of the throws.
But the relays again were the big difference maker for the Braves, as they won the shuttle hurdle, 4x100, and medley relays worth 30 more points. Cherokee also was second in the 4x400, and third in the 4x200.
Eli Ramirez, Kyle Shuck, Koch, and Drew Lugar ran the shuttle hurdle relay, winning in a time of 1:03.28; Schuett, Everson Siegel, Michael Boothby, and Chris Campbell teamed to win the 4x100 in 44.83; and Dawson, Josh Mugge, Nick Daum, and Evan Lundell were aboard the winning medley relay in a time of 3:51.39.
Daum, Siegel, Mugge, and Lundell placed second in the 4x400 relay with a 3:33.55 clocking. The Braves were third in the 4x200 with Jordan Hecox, Mugge, Boothby, and Schuett aboard in a time of 1:35.73. Cherokee was fourth in the 4x800 with Lundell, Philip Bieber, Daum, and Dan Bieber clocking a 3:51.39.
Individually, Ramirez was second in the 110 high hurdles in 15.52, and Lugar was third in a time of 15.93. Campbell also was second in the 100 meters in a time of 11.47. Ramirez was second in the 400 hurdles in 58.12, and Lugar placed fourth in a time of 59.99. Campbell also was second in the 200 meters in 23.48, and Siegel was fourth in 23.73.
Cherokee won the Class A team title with 119 points, followed by Le Mars 103, Unity Christian 94, MOC-Floyd Valley 71, Sheldon 60, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 43, Hull Western Christian 43, and Sibley-Ocheyedan 25.
The Braves, who've won all four of their outdoor meets so far this season, compete in the Sheldon Relays on April 19t, and at the Sioux City Relays on April 21.
