Braves win Sioux City Relays

Dawson, relays propel Cherokee to Class B title

SIOUX CITY - The Cherokee Braves track and field squad notched two first-place finishes, one second, and three thirds on their way to the Class B team title of the rugged Sioux City Relays here Saturday.

The team victory is Cherokee fourth in four meets this season, also including team titles won at the Cherokee Quad, Le Mars Invitational, and Orange City Unity Christian Knight Relays.

In Sioux City, the Washington High boys corralled 55 team points to beat runner-up Glenwood with 52, followed by MOC-Floyd Valley 44, Le Mars 43, Sioux Center 39, Okoboji 21, South Sioux City, Neb. 20, Mount Michaels Elk Horn, Spirit Lake 7.

Cherokee's Andy Dawson soared 6-4 to win the high jump, and the Braves 4x100 relay of Kyle Schuett, Everson Siegel, Michael Boothby, and Chris Campbell sped to the championship with a 44.82 clocking.

Cherokee's 4x400 relay unit of Drew Lugar, Siegel, Nick Daum, and Evan Lundell placed second in a time of 3:39.12.

Thirds went to Lugar with a 16.44 time in the 110-meter hurdles, and Campbell's 11.53 clocking in the 100 meters. The Braves 4x200 relay of Schuett, Siegel, Josh Mugge, and Campbell also placed third in a time of 34.81.

Cherokee was fourth in the medley relay with Boothby, Mugge, Daum, and Lundell timed in 3:52.35.

Schuett was fifth in the 100 meters in a time of 11.78. Sixth-place finishes went to Eli Ramirez with a 17.14 time in the 110-meter hurdles, Lugar's 16.35 time in the 110-meter elite hurdles, and Ramirez with a 58.31 time in the 400-meter low hurdles.

The Braves also competed in the Sheldon Track & Field Invitational last week, but with all athletes competing in the Sioux City Relays held out of action.

Matt Koch notched the Braves lone placement, earning second in the high jump with a 5-10 leap.

In JV boys action at Sheldon, Kyle Schuck placed first in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 17.80, was second in the high jump with a 5-6 effort, and was sixth in the 400-meter low hurdles in a time of 1:07.79.

Dan Bieber was third in the long jump with a 17-5 1/4 effort, and Nate O'Bryan was third in the 3200 meters in a time of 11:49.54. The Young Braves medley relay of Jeremy Werthman, Eric Van Voorst, Kody Riggs, and Dan Bieber also was third in a time of 4:16.94. Nick O'Bryan was sixth in the 1600 meters in a time of 5:38.5.
