SHELDON - The Cherokee Braves golf squad carded a season-best 173 but still came up short in a Lakes Conference triangular here Monday, won by Hull Western Christian with a 169 stroke total. The host Sheldon Orabs were second with 170.
Low scorers for Cherokee were David Cook 41, Andrew Braun 43, Brock Benson 44, and Matt Pitts 45. Also for the Braves, Casey Cuthrell shot 47, and Mark Johnson 49.
David Doely of Sheldon was medalist with a 40, and Kevin Fopma of HWC was runner-up with a 41, nosing out Cherokee's Cook on handicap holes.
Sheldon won the JV match with a 185, while Cheorkee was second at 194, and HWC 197.
Low for Cherokee were Wayne Thompson 46, Matthew Boothby 48, Tom Weaver 50, and Paxton O'Connor 50. Also for the Braves, Emmett Kohn carded a 52, and Dillon Devitt a 54.
"This was a perfect day for golf," said Cherokee coach James DeVos. "For the second meet in a row, the varsity boys lowered their season best. We were close to picking up a victory, but fell shy by three strokes. It was a very competitive meet and our boys shot very well."
The Braves play in the Storm Lake Invitational at Lake Creek Country Club on Saturday.
