Gehlen wins River Valley Track

CORRECTIONVILLE -- LeMars Gehlen Catholic won both the boys' and girls' team competitions at the River Valley Invitational Track Meet held here on April 27th, in great weather conditions.

The Gehlen girls scored 137 points to out-distance second-place Hinton by 43 points. Galva-Holstein finished third with 72 points, Kingsley-Pierson fourth with 64, and host River Valley was fifth in the twelve-team field, with 52 points.

The Aurelia girls had only a two-woman team -- Leah Kai and Katee Dean -- because the other team members were on the Aurelia band's trip to perform in Texas.

In the boys' competition, Gehlen scored 82 points, to top Schaller-Crestland's 73 points. Remsen-Union (70), Galva-Holstein (63), West Monona (58), Aurelia (48) and Hinton (46) were next in line. Host River Valley scored 20 points to take 10th place.

Aurelia's Jared Bruce and Galva-Holstein's Caleb Egger, two of the area's best distance runners, staged an exciting sprint to the finish in the 3200 meter run, with Bruce edging Egger. The Bulldog junior posted a time of 10:37.50, and the Pirate senior finished in 10:38.96. Bruce also won the 1600 meter run, in 4:52.02.

West Monona's Steven Willey scored a triple, winning the 100 meter dash in 11.14, the 400 meter dash in 51.29, and the 800 meter run in 2:03.29. Second place in that event went to Bruce, who ran a 2:08.13. Hinton's Eli Kroll set a new meet record in the shot put, tossing the metal ball 53-4 to better the previous record by an inch and a quarter.

Other placings by area schools and individuals in the boys events--

River Valley -- 5th in the 4 x 200 relay (1:41.05); 400 meter dash -- Chance Cullen, 4th, in 55.08; 1600 medley -- 3rd (3:55.81); 400 meter hurdles -- Cody Holcomb, 5th (1:01.38); 4 x 100- 5th (49.73); discus -- Matthew Lundt, 5th, 123-1

Galva-Holstein -- 110 hurdles -- Jared Schlinz, 3rd (16.6); 100 meters - Sam Radke, 2nd (11.36); 200 meters -- Radke (23.55); medley relay, 5th (3:59.98); 400 hurdles -- Kellen Jacobsen, 6th (1:01.66); 4 x 400 -- 4th (3:45.69); high jump -- Josh Werner, tie for 5th (5-6); shot put -- Aric Allen,3rd (45-1); discus -- Allen, 2nd (by an inch), 140-10; 4 x 800- 6th (9:10.72); and shuttle hurdles, 1st (1:03.64)

Aurelia -- 100 meters -- Jacob Bruce, 6th (11.54); 400 meters -- Jacob Bruce, 3rd (53.83); 1600 meters- Aaron Bruce, 3rd (5:01.99); 200 meters -- Jacob Bruce, 5th (24.15); high jump -- Anthony Fowler, 3rd (5-6).

For the girls, there were two area winners - Heather Husman of River Valley in the 200 (27.13); and Galva-Holstein's Jayde Boyle in the 1500 meter run, where she posted a time of 5:29.48.

Other River Valley performances included Kaysi Byers - 4th in the 1500 meters ( 5:37.51) and 2nd in the 3000 meters (12:27.07); 2nd in the 4 x 800 relay (11:04.66); 3rd in the 4 x 200 (1:56.67); 100 hurdles - Katie Carnes (17.12); 800 meters - Jodi Peterson (2:41.47);and 4th in the 4 x 100 (56.16), and distance medley -- 3rd (4:48.59)

Galva-Holstein's placings, in addition to Boyle's win in the 1500, included: 3000 meters -- Maddy McAreavy, 3rd (12:27.07); shuttle hurdles -- 2nd (1:13.99); 4 x 800, 4th (11:53.19); distance medley -- 2nd (4:43.46); 400 meters- Meagan Meyer, 5th (1:08.86); 800 meters -- Breanna Mathes, 2nd (2:35.11) and Boyle, 3rd (2:35.27); sprint medley -- 5th (2:12.19); 1500 meters -- McAreavy, 3rd (5:36.38); 4 x 400 -- 4th (4:36.75);long jump -- Meagan Meyer -- 4th (14-4); and discus -- Mel Schoer, 4th (94-1)

Aurelia's Katee Dean finished 4th in the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 17.06. Hinton's Kinsey Bak smashed the old meet record of 16.0 in this event, posting a new record time of 15.27. Bak also won the high jump and long jump. In the former event, she jumped 5-5 to tie the meet mark set by former Galva-Holstein standout Teresa Breyfogle in 1993. Bak also broke Breyfogle's 1993 long jump mark of 16-9, leaping 17-5.
