STORM LAKE - Although uncharacteristically failing to place in a few events, the Cherokee Braves still managed a third-place finish in the team title race, just one point out of second place at the Tornado Relays in Storm Lake Tuesday night.
Le Mars won the boys division with 92 points, followed by Spencer 86, Cherokee 85, Estherville-LC 63.5, Spirit Lake Park 60, MOC-Floyd Valley 60, Carroll Kuemper 57, and Storm Lake 54.5. This was the first track and field meet the Braves have failed to win this season.
The Braves' fleet 4x200 relay was positioned to place high when a bad baton exchange at the end of the first leg cost them valuable seconds and the team of Hecox, Josh Mugge, Michael Boothby, and Campbell had to settle for fifth place.
Cherokee seconds went to Andy Dawson's 6-2 high jump, Schuett's 22.59 time in the 200 meters and 11.0 time in the 100 meters, and Drew Lugar's 15.38 clocking in the 110-meter hurdles.
The Braves' 4x400 relay team of Siegel, Lugar, Mugge, and Nick Daum placed third in a time of 3:36.71.
Cherokee fourths went to Campbell's 11.16 time in the 100 meters, Schuett's 20-05 long jump, Matt Koch's 5-8 high jump, Ramirez's 59.02 time in the 400-meter hurdles, and the medley relay team of Michael Boothby, Mugge, Ryan white, and Evan Lundell timed in 3:53.36.
The Braves compete in the Lakes Conference Track & Field Meet in Emmetsburg on Monday.
