State championship performance on IPTV Wednesday
Aurelia will be performing at a clinic on "Getting Your Band Swinging" to band directors from across the state. The clinic will be presented by Rick Stitzel, who composed or arranged the three songs the band will be playing.
One of those songs, "A-Town Blues" was commissioned by the band, and the band finally got to meet the composer when they were in Texas last week. Not only that, but they won the competition down there, too, among bands from all around the country - and brought another nine trophies home!
Another highlight of the year will be the broadcast of the band's state championship performance this Wednesday on Iowa Public Television. Check your local listings, as they say.
The band started practicing in October, coming in before school, and the wrap-up of their season at the IBA meeting this week means their season this year lasted basically the entire school year - much longer than any of the athletic teams' seasons.
So, while fifth-year director Jason Heeren and his musicians are very happy about their success, and will treasure the memories of winning the state championship and the wonderful trip to Arlington, Texas, the consensus opinion seems to be that all will be glad the year is coming to an end.
Aurelia was also able to field a "Jazz II" band this year for the first time. This band consists of musicians from grades 6 - 10 who were interested in learning about, and playing, jazz music. So it appears that the jazz band tradition at Aurelia will continue to flourish for many years, and people who attend concerts and competitions know they will be treated to some great sounds.
