Kallyn Buschkamp of Cherokee, Kimberly Peterson of Cleghorn, and Andrew Fick of Quimby were all recognized by Governor Chet Culver for outstanding academic achievement, at the fifth annual Governor's Scholar Recognition Ceremony on April 29 at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.
Buschkamp is a student at Washington High School, Peterson at Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn High School and Fick at River Valley High School.
The state- wide program, sponsored by the Iowa Governor's Office, Iowa High School Athletic Association, and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, honored more than 450 high school seniors from throughout Iowa. The 2007 Teacher of the Year, Jan Kesse of Ankeny Community Schools was also recognized for her accomplishments.
In addition to being recognized as the state's brightest students, 99 percent of the group participates in school activities, with more than 80 percent participating in at least one athletic competition. To date, more than 60 percent of the group plan to continue their education in Iowa.
