Dierenfeld, Mathes, G-H 4x800, sprint medley relays qualify
HOLSTEIN - The Galva-Holstein and Aurelia Girls' track teams both performed well at the Class 1A District Track & Field Meet here Saturday, and both schools will be sending representatives to the State Track Meet in Des Moines this week.
Ar-We-Va won the team title with 97 points, and Southern Cal was second with 89 points. SE Webster-Grand finished third with 65 points. Galva-Holstein finished sixth and Aurelia eighth with 48 and 39 points, respectively.
Other top performances by the two schools in events just missing out on a state berth, included G-H's Meagan Meyer, 4th in the 400 meters (1:06.21); Boyle 4th in the 1500 meters in 5:20.99; Aurelia's shuttle hurdle team in a school-record time of 1:09,27 (Jessica Cougill, Kristine Munden, Priscilla Otto, and Katee Dean), which earned them a third place finish behind Ar-We-Va and Southern Cal, which turned in two of the best times in the state. The Bulldogs' 4x100 team of Munden, Dean, Christa Corderman, and Dierenfield placed 4th, in a time of 53.48.
Also making state was Galva-Holstein's 4x800 team (Boyle, Courtnie Voss, Maddy McAreavy, and Mathes), which took 3rd, in 11:06.75.
Aurelia's sprint medley (Munden, Dean, Dierenfield, and Erin Laursen) also placed 3rd, with a time of 2:01.84. Munden also took 4th in the discus, throwing 92-9; and Aurelia's Tiffany Johnson edged teammate Priscilla Otto for 4th in the long jump, jumping 14-5 to Otto's 14-4 1/2.
Aurelia Coach Jolene Hultgren was very pleased with her team effort. In addition to the shuttle hurdle team setting a new school mark, all of the other relays posted their best times of the season, and Desiree Thatcher had her personal best in the 1500 meter run, finishing 6th in 14:14.96.
Hultgren also said she and the athletes are very proud of Dierenfield's going to the State Meet.
