Cuco Polendo is a former boxer whose boxing career lasted from 1973 to 1980. He was the Mexico Golden Glove runner-up 1974 and the West Texas State Golden Glove runner-up in 1978.

He proudly states the he won two years in a row boxing in Las Vegas and Phoenix and has won against Freddie Roach the trainer of Oscar De La Hoya. Although he hasn't boxed professionally for 27 years, the sport is still part of his life.

Recently his three grandsons have reached their early teens, and Polendo has passed on his knowledge of the sport to them. In doing so, he got to thinking about helping other area youths to learn the sport.

His plans for the future include trying to get a youth league started here in Cherokee, and in Storm Lake. If both leagues get started, they could have exhibition matches between towns.

"Boxing used to be so popular years ago and I would like to bring boxing back to this area" said Polendo. He has offered to train whoever wants to learn how to box.
