PAULLINA - South O'Brien scored a run in the eighth inning to grab an exciting 8-7 victory over Hinton in War Eagle Conference softball action here Tuesday night, the season-opener for the host Wolverines.
SOS tallied eight runs on eight hits, committed five errors, and stranded 14 base runners in the game played in rain at times.
Aphton Roberts got the pitching win for South O'Brien, allowing three earned runs on10 hits, and striking out 12 Hinton batters.
The winners were led on offense by Chelsie Rohrs with a single, double, triple, and two RBI. Rachel Steinkamp had two singles and two RBI.
The score was tied at 7-7 into the bottom of the extra inning when Ashton Lansink walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, reached third on a Rohrs single, and scored on a passed ball with Taylor Julian at the plate.
The SOS JV won 13-0. That game, played after the varsity due to the threatening weather, was called by rain in the fourth inning.
"The rain made it difficult to get a grip on the ball," noted SOS coach Mary Helfter. "Once the rain subsided, pitchers for both teams benefited. Roberts recovered well and finished with 12 strikeouts."
SOS hosts West Sioux tonight and plays in the MOC-Floyd Valley Tournament Saturday in Orange City.
