Feds drop Gary investigation

Monday, June 11, 2007

The federal inspector general's office in Kansas City, Mo., has announced that it was dropping the investigation regarding Dr. Thomas Gary's attempted sale of the county's Medicare identification number for $1 to Careage Management.

At a Cherokee County Board of Supervisors meeting last week, Robert Eps, a Medicare fraud investigator for a multi-state region, told the supervisors that an appointed county official would not have the authority to sell a federal identification number. He said he was referring the matter to the inspector general's office.

It was determined by the inspector general's office that the identification number has not been used by any entity other than the county, so there has been no fraud committed.
