South O'Brien girls win 2 of 3

Thursday, June 14, 2007

The South O'Brien softball team won two of three War Eagle Conference games recently, defeating West Sioux 6-2 and Le Mars Gehlen 9-2, and falling 4-0 to rated Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Ashton Lansink rapped a two-run single in the second inning to get the Wolverines off and running in the win over West Sioux in Paullina. Faith Wittrock, Carrie Egdorf, and Aphton Roberts each notched two hits for the winners. Lindsay Woolston had a hit, was hit by a pitch, and scored two runs for SOS.

Roberts got the pitching win, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks, with seven strikeouts.

"Our team backed her up with error-free defense," noted SOS coach Mary Helfter. "One highlight was a double play on a line drive to second baseman Miranda Kelleher who then tossed the ball to Chelsey Ebel."

In the 4-0 loss to SB-L, SOS managed seven hits, with Lansink leading the way with a 3-3 effort. Rachel Steinkamp had two singles, and Egdorf and Christine Haden each had a hit. The Wolverines loaded the bases in both the fourth and sixth innings, but failed to score.

Roberts took the mound loss for SOS, giving up four runs on nine hits and no walks, with five strikeouts.

"I feel we're playing good softball," said Helfter. "As the season progresses and our offense gains some confidence, I hope that will translate into more wins."

Wittrock had three hits to pace SOS over Gehlen in Le Mars, while Woolston stroked two hits with three RBI, Taylor Julian a triple and two RBI, and Egdorf a two-run single. Roberts, Steinkamp, and Haden each had hits for the winners.

Roberts got the pitching win, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk, with three Ks.

The SOS girls now sport a 4-5 record, including a 3-2 mark in the rugged War Eagle Conference.
