The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn boys jumped off to a 2-0 start on the 2007 season by winning both games played in the recent MMC Tournament in Marcus.
The Eagles defeated Remsen-Union 11-4 in the opener, and then took out River Valley 7-5 to win their own tourney.
Tim Holmes got the pitching win for MMC against the Rockets, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out five in five innings of work. Nate Dammann pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits, no walks and five Ks.
Steven Wetherell led the potent Eagle offense with a 3-4 day, including three RBI and a run scored. Dammann was 2-4 with three RBI, and Holmes 1-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
"It was a good first game for us," said MMC coach Al Vasher. "We made some mistakes, but overall I was pleased with our effort."
Jacob Lehnhoff went the distance to get the pitching win over River Valley, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out 16 batters.
Lehnhoff also paced the winners at the plate with a 2-4 effort, two RBI and two runs scored. Wes Reuter was 3-3 with three runs scored, and Wetherell 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
"Jacob pitched an ountstanding game," said Vasher. "The team supported him with scoring runs. The team is coming together and headed in the right direction."
MMC opened the War Eagle Conference season with a narrow 5-4 setback at Le Mars Gehlen May 30. Holmes took the mound loss, giving up five runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out nine.
Wetherell led the offense with a 2-3 effort, two RBI and a run scored. Lehnhoff, Justin Henke, and Joe Wilcox also had hits for the Eagles.
"I was pleased with the way we played," said coach Vasher. "Even though we didn't come out with a win, I thought the boys played hard and as a team."
