HOLSTEIN - The Galva-Holstein girls defeated Remsen-Union Friday night in Maple Valley Conference softball action here, 10-1. Freshman Jaime Christensen gave up only three hits, and struck out five batters while walking just two, to lead the Lady Pirates.

The Galva-Holstein hitters pounded out 12 hits on their way to the victory, led by Brea Slaybaugh with three hits, including a double and triple, and one RBI. Sam Grayson added two hits, including a double.

On Saturday, the Lady Pirates traveled to Paullina to compete in the South O'Brien Tournament. Unfortunately, the Lady Pirates were 0-2 on the day. They lost their first game to the Clay Central-Everly Mavericks by a 4-3 score, then dropped one to the host Wolverines, 10-4.

In the CC-E game, Sarah Lichter and Emily Schiernbeck both went 2-3 at the plate. Lichter drove in two runs, and Schiernbeck scored twice. Christensen was the hard-luck losing pitcher, as she gave up just five hits, struck out six, and didn't allow a single runner to reach base on a walk.

In the South O'Brien game, Heather Joslin led the way with a 3-3 performance, including two doubles, scored twice, and drove in a run. Victoria Andresen went 2 for 2 at the plate, Christensen took the loss on the hill, surrendering five hits while striking out four and walking one.

Coach Scott Phelps felt the team's hitting and pitching did well at the tournament but, he said, "the defense let us down." Phelps said the coaches will continue to work with their young team on fundamentals, and "see what happens." Galva-Holstein now has a 4-6 overall season mark.

Galva-Holstein took on the Westwood Rebels in Maple Valley Conference softball action in Sloan on Monday, and, after a hard-fought game, the Lady Pirates prevailed by a 10-6 score.

Freshman hurler Jaime Christensen again excelled on the mound for coach Scott Phelps' G-H team. Christensen threw seven innings and surrendered only six hits, while walking only three batters and striking out nine.

Dani Boyle and Sam Grayson led Lady Pirate hitters, with Boyle going 3 for 4 at the plate, scoring three times, slugging a triple, and stealing a base. Grayson chipped in with three hits and drove one run across. Lindsey Joslin had two hits, including a two-bagger, scored twice, and drove in one.

Galva- Holstein now stands at 3-1 in conference action and 5-6 overall. The G-H coaches said they were very happy with the team's

effort at Sloan, and hope they can maintain that effort through a busy week of softball action.
