Aquatic center delay explained

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Over the weekend, engineers, construction crews and others were working to figure out why the filtration system at the newly completed Bacon Aquatic Center was not clearing the water.

By a process of elimination, it was determined that construction material, primarily cement and masonry dust from the construction project was clogging the filtration system.

The decision was made to drain the pool and to clean out the filtration system, a process that confirmed the conclusion made earlier regarding the reason for the problem.

As Saturday night turned into Sunday morning, the pool was being refilled, the operation obviously successful, but it was also obvious that the pool would not be ready for the scheduled Monday evening opening.

A delay was announced, making the opening on Thursday June 21, which is technically the first day of summer. A meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. There will be a ceremony at 6:45 p.m. and afterwards, anyone in a bathing suit will be allowed to go into the pool.
