POCAHONTAS - The improving Cherokee Washington High softball team frolicked past Pocahontas Area 16-3 here June 15 in a non-conference make-up game - originally scheduled for May 30, but rained out on that date.
Winning Cherokee pitcher Shauna Drefke shut down the Maidens' offense on just three hits, while allowing two earned runs, two walks, and striking out two in the five inning game called due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Cherokee scored nine earned runs on nine hits off Pocahontas Area pitcher Schnell, who walked one and struck out five.
Kelsey Essick led the Cherokee charge with a 2-4 night, three runs scored and two RBI. Alanna Valentine was 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, Emily Anderson 1-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, Nicole Hatch 1-1 with a double and two RBI, Alison Husman 1-2 with a run scored, Jenna Phipps 1-1, Jenn Walsh two RBI, Kylie Dilla 1-3 with two runs scored an an RBI, and Lynn Carlson with two RBI and a run scored.
"Tonight was a complete team effort," said Cherokee coach Tara Malausky. "Everyone got to play. The subs off the bench did a great job coming to the plate and putting the ball in play."
Cherokee is now 5-7 for the season and 2-2 in Lakes Conference play.
