Monday, July 9, 2007

The South O'Brien softball team racked up a 2-4 record against some rugged competition in recent action, including a 2-2 slate in the Okoboji Tournament.

Top-ranked Akron-Westfield toppled the Wolverines 11-1 in War Eagle Conference action in Paullina. Aphton Roberts got the pitching loss, allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits and four walks, with one strikeout. Rachel Steinkamp, Carrie Egdorf, Roberts, Ashton Lansink, and Chelsie Rohrs had hits for the Wolverines.

SOS beat Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 15-6 in the opener of the Okoboji Tournament, with Roberts getting the win. She gave up three earned runs on five hits and one walk, with six strikeouts. SOS pounded out 15 hits, and every Wolverine batter got a hit or RBI. Egdorf was 4-4 with two RBI, Christine Haden 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Steinkamp 2-3 and three RBI, and Lindsay Woolston 2-4 and two RBI.

In the 8-2 win over MOC-Floyd Valley in the second round of the tourney, Roberts again got the win, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks, with eight Ks. Rohrs had two hits and three RBI, Chelsey Ebel two hits and two RBI, and Taylor Julian two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.

In a 5-4 loss to Sioux Central in the tourney, Lansink took the pitching setback, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk, with three Ks. Egdorf, Haden, and Jullian each rapped two hits, but the SOS offense stranded nine base runners and made four errors in one inning that was the difference in the game.

Sheldon slammed SOS 12-1 in the championship game of the tourney, thanks to a six-run fourth inning. Lansink took the loss for SOS, giving up eight earned runs on 11 hits and six walks, with three Ks. Woolston, Julian, Faith Wittrock, Rohrs, and Ebel had hits for the Wolverines, with Woolston scoring the team's lone run.

Back in regular season play last week against a ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton team, another rugged WEC foe, SOS lost 5-0, as Warrior pitcher Amber Baird fired a perfect game. Roberts took the loss for SOS, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks, with three Ks.

South O'Brien is now 12-10 over all and 8-4 in the WEC.
