PAULLINA -- Coach Mary Helfter's South O'Brien Wolverines won two big War Eagle Conference games here in softball action last week.

On Thursday, the opponent was Spalding Catholic. Spalding scored a run in the top of the fifth inning on two singles. Andrea Hansen singled, stole second, and scored when Amy Stoll hit a single. Stoll tried to make it to third as the throw bounded past SOS catcher Chelsie Rohrs, but Rohrs retrieved the ball and threw to third where Rachel Steinkamp tagged the runner out.

The Wolverines tied it with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Faith Wittrock hit an infield single and advanced to third when the throw rolled to the right field fence. Wittrock scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Woolston.

South O'Brien scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Chelsey Ebel reached base when the Spalding shortstop struggled with her infield hit. Then Wittrock hit another infield single. Miranda Kelleher was running for Ebel and got forced out at third on a fielder's choice. With two outs, pitcher Aphton Roberts hit a single to score Wittrock and end the game.

Taylor Julian and Rachel Steinkamp hit the other singles for South O'Brien.

Roberts earned the win on the mound. She struck out three, walked three, and scattered four hits.

South O'Brien also took the JV contest by a 10-1 score.

In a game re-scheduled after a July 3rd rain out, the Wolverines defeated Remsen St. Mary's here on Friday, 9-1.

Carrie Egdorf had three hits for South O'Brien, and winning pitcher Aphton Roberts helped her own cause by driving in three runs. Lindsay Woolston had two RBI on a triple, one of three hits by the senior centerfielder. Second baseman Christine Haden had two hits, and sophomore shortstop Ashton Lansink scored three times, as the Wolverines totaled 11 hits, in backing junior hurler Roberts' seven-hit, 11-strikeout performance.

The Wolverines now sport a 17-11 season mark, and are 13-5 in War Eagle Conference play.

South O'Brien wraps up their regular season with four games this week, then begins tournament play against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Monday at 7 p.m. at Hartley.
