Drefke fires 6-hit shutout at Falcons

BATTLE CREEK - The gritty Cherokee Washington High softball team nicked a tough Class 2A District Tournament foe on the road here Monday night, with an exciting 1-0 victory over 15th-ranked Battle Creek-Ida Grove.

Cherokee ace Shauna Drefke limited the potent Falcons to six scattered hits and one walk, while striking out four in seven innings of work to fCherokee nips BCIG, 1-0ashion her shutout.

Cherokee scored the game's lone run in the first inning when Sam Phipps plated Kelsey Essick with a single.

Essick was 1-4 with a run scored, Phipps 1-3 with that big RBI, Emily Anderson 3-3 with a stolen base, and Lacie Drennan 1-2 with a sacrifice to account for Cherokee's six total hits off BCIG's losing pitcher Chelsey Wilke. Wilke struck out four Cherokee batters.

The 2007 Maple Valley Conference champions, BCIG finishes the season with a 29-11 record.

"Tonight the kids came ready to play," said Cherokee coach Tara Malausky. "I have told the kids in the last few days of practice that softball is simple - the team who scores the most runs wins - we have to take care of our business first and they did!"

Cherokee (13-21)will play Manson-Northwest Webster in second round play.The WHS gals beat the Cougars 10-7 in a non-conference tussle in Cherokee on July 10.
