Engel was pleased to state that when the plant is up and running, they will employ 24. The board is pleased to have 1,000 local investors to get the project become a reality. That in itself will allow the plant to bring back a higher return to the area's economy.
Farmer's income will increase 25 percent and more due to this proposed plant. It will also create jobs and be a boon to the economy.
One of the main reasons the plant will be successful is that they will use biomass pellets, which will save 60 percent of the energy costs. State Senator Ron Wieck and State Representative Dan Huseman noted that changing the law so the Cherokee County Landfill can begin to produce these biopellets is another great boon for this area. It will help immensely with dealing with the landfill's longevity. Both endorsed the building of the biodiesel plant and complimented local leaders for going ahead with their ideas.
It was brought out that Marcus will be the second community in the state to have both an ethanol and biodiesel plant. Galva has the first. It was also noted that Marcus will have a much larger biodiesel plant. There are 13 biodiesel plants in the state.
Congressman Steve King was pleased with this dream of having the fifth district that he represents in D.C. be a world leader in bioenergy. The fifth district can boast of not only wind powder, ethanol and biodiesel but bio mass pellets. Biofuel helping to produce biofuel. King thought it is inspirational to the rest of the country. The fifth district leads Iowa in having bio plants and Iowa leads the nation.
Senator Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin had prior commitments but sent letters to be read. Other speakers included Monte Shaw, executive director for Renewable Energy; Tom Oswald, a director for Iowa Soybean Association; Randy Olson, Executive director of Iowa Biodiesel Council; Mark Buschkamp, executive director of Cherokee Economic Development Corp. and Paul Bratney, President and CEO of Bratney Co. who will be building the plant. Bratney is rated top in their field.
