The 98-foot circular area just west of the aquatic center will be the home of the Erlandson Playscape -- an extensive collection of play equipment acquired through a donation from the Erlandson Foundation. The equipment will be assembled with the supervision of Premier Recreation Products representatives from Des Moines, Cherokee Park Department employees, and a large number of local volunteers.
Two semi loads of play equipment arrived in July and has been stored near the playground area west of the aquatic center. This Wednesday the process of staking out the site and drilling the many holes in the ground needed for the vertical supports will begin with company and Cherokee Parks staff and a few volunteers.
By Friday and Saturday (the 24th and 25th) a much larger group of volunteers will be needed to assist with assembly. Jean Benson has been assisting with the coordination of volunteers and encourages any interested people to join the effort -- if even for a short period of time. Any person who is not already "on the list" and would like to help should call Jean at the CAEDC office (225-5739) or leave word for her at the Park and Rec office (225-2715). No particular mechanical skills are necessary -- the work will largely involve lifting and positioning of equipment parts and the attachment of the parts will the bolts provided.
On Friday and Saturday work will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will continue through Friday until dusk and on Saturday until (hopefully) completed.
