PAULLINA - The South O'Brien Wolverines got their season off to a good start with an exciting 3-1 War Eagle Conference win over the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Eagles in volleyball action here last week.
The Wolverines won by game scores of 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, and 25-18.
Wolverine coach Denise Erdmann said it was "exciting to start the season with a victory. Our defense did a nice job blocking and digging, and Chelsie Rohrs had a great night at the net."
Rohrs had seven blocks and Rachel Tilley four for the Wolverines, while Aphton Roberts had 30 digs, Christine Haden 28, Briana Shriver 23, and Reagan Ebel 21. Shriver also had 15 assists to lead the team in that department. Tilly led in kills with nine, followed by Haden with eight and Rohrs with seven.
"When we served well," continued Erdmann, "we were able to give ourselves a bit of breathing room. MMC is a scrappy team, and that forced us to keep the ball in play until we had the opportunity for a strong hit."
Kaylee Dreckman led MMC in serving with a 22-23 effort and two aces. She was followed by Beth Mohning 14-16 and one ace, Andrea Doeden 12-13 and two aces, and Sam Taylor 12-14 and one ace.
Doeden led the Eagles in spikes with 28-36 and seven kills, while Mohning was 16-17 and three kills, Taylor 16-21 and nine kills, Ashley Henke 13-13 and three kills, and Jessica Zubrod 10-14 and four kills.
Dreckman led in sets for MMC with 108-120 assists and 24 aces.
