SPENCER - The South O'Brien Lady Wolverines played against a tough field at the Spencer Early Bird Tournament Saturday, and were not able to win any of their three matches.
Coach Denise Erdmann, however, said that "overall, I'm pleased with a lot of things we did...we had some long rallies with some tough teams. It was good for us to experience this type of play and learn from it. Our serving was outstanding."
In their first match, SOS took on Okoboji and, said Erdmann, "we played Okoboji tough, especially in game one." Okoboji took advantage of a couple of Wolverine errors to pull that first game out, 21-18, then took game two by a 21-12 score. Offensively, Christine Haden led the Lady Wolverines at the net with four kills; Aphton Roberts, with 15, and Reagan Ebel, with 11, led the way in digs; and Ebel and Roberts led the serving effort.
South O'Brien's second match was against the host Spencer team, a tough offensive team "especially when their middle hitter is in the front row," said Erdmann. The team goal was to make a run when that hitter was in the back row, and they did. In the end, the Lakes Conference team took two 21-15 games from South O'Brien.
The Lady Wolverines were able to win their first game of the day in their next match, beating the Clay Central-Everly Mavericks 21-15 in game one of their match. SOS served very well in the match, but had several errors in game two, which they lost, 12-21. The final game also went to CC-E, by a 9-15 score.
