REMSEN - In an exciting game that saw five lead changes, Aurelia senior standout Jared Bruce returned a Remsen-Union kickoff 75 yards for the final go-ahead score with 6:27 remaining in regulation, then ran for the two-point conversion as the Bulldogs topped the Rockets 30-24 in both teams' District opener.

The Bulldogs were outgained 215 yards to 172 yards by the Rockets, and R-U also had 13 first downs to the Bulldogs' 11.

Alec Ohlson led Bulldog rushers with 44 yards on 17 carries and scored one touchdown. Jared Bruce completed 7 of 10 pass attempts for 88 yards and two touchdowns, both to younger brother Aaron.

The biggest gains of the night for the 'Dogs came on kickoff returns. In addition to Bruce's 75 yard return, Ohlson returned two Rocket kickoffs for 83 yards.

Linebacker Nick Felten led the Bulldog defense with 13 total tackles, and defensive back Steve White added 11. Aaron Bruce and Ohlson added nine apiece, and Anthony Fowler had eight stops.

Aurelia coach Myron Radke's comments on the game: "We played very hard, but not smart at all times. The first half was theirs, the second half ours. Our guys hung in there to the end, and ended up winning. Jared Bruce's 75 yard return was awesome. A lot of people played and contributed to the win. (Now we're) getting ready for Spalding."

The Bulldogs are now 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in District 3 play. They take on Spalding Catholic in another district game this Friday at Aurelia, then host the dangerous Remsen St. Mary's team at their homecoming game on September 28.
