Lady Pirates beat rated teams, record 3-1 mark
CARROLL - The Galva-Holstein volleyball team won three matches in their pool play at a volleyball tournament here on Sept. 15, and Coach Scott Mitchell said that "overall we had a good day."
The Lady Pirates' wins in pool play included victories over Nevada, the #14 team in Class 3A, and Humboldt, ranked #11 in 3A. They beat Nevada 21-18, 20-22, 15-12 and Humboldt 21-15, 21-19, before winding up pool play with a victory over Irwin-Kirkman-Manilla, 21-15, 21-12.
Unfortunately, said coach Mitchell, getting beat by Ar-We-Va in the semi-finals somewhat overshadowed their good play earlier. The Westerners topped Galva-Holstein 25-15, 25-19 in the semi-finals.
Mitchell said the tournament results are "a good reminder that we need to play every point."
Heather Joslin led Lady Pirate hitters with 32 kills for the tournament, while her sister Lindsey had 17 and Brandi Wagoner 14.
Lanae Broesder dished up 69 assists, Wagoner had six blocks, Heather and Lindsey Joslin had 24 and 20 digs , respectively, and Lindsey Joslin, with seven and Ashley Buell and Brea Slaybaugh, with five each, led the team in ace serves.
Galva-Holstein's season record is now 12-4, with a Maple Valley Conference mark of 7-1.
