Shirley E. Balding, 83, of Jefferson, died on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007 at the Regency Park Nursing & Rehab Center in Jefferson. There will be no services. Burial was in the Good Hope Cemetery, rural Cherokee. The Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee is in charge of the arrangements.
Shirley was born Dec. 29, 1923 at Holstein, to Carl and LeNita (Ohlson) Kahl. She graduated from Holstein High School. She attended St. Olaf College at Northfield, Minn.
She received her Bachelor's Degree in Music at University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She received her Masters Degree at the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. She had taught elementary music at various schools including Jefferson and Sibley, retiring in 1974.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Eugene Kahl and a sister June Massey.
She is survived by one son and one daughter: Craig Balding of Minneapolis, Minn.; Angela Malenfant and her husband John of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren: Allison, Stephanie and Lauren; a sister Barbara Kjorness and her husband Lawrence of Sioux City, a sister-in-law Dorothy Kahl of West Des Moines; a brother-in-law Mark Massey of Bay Springs,
