SHELDON - Competing without its lead runner, the Cherokee Braves cross country team battled tough competition and hot, windy weather at Thursday's Sheldon Invitational here.

Deep and talented Spirit Lake Park won the boys team title with 46 points, followed by Spencer 75, Hull Western Christian 95, MOC-Floyd Valley 108, Orange City Unity Christian 108, Storm Lake 151, Le Mars 156, Sheldon 163, and Cherokee 257.

Nate O'Bryan, the Braves top runner this season, is currently out of action with walking pneumonia, but is expected to be back soon, according to Cherokee coach Deb Hankens.

Nate's brother Nick O'Bryan led the Cherokee charge at Sheldon, placing 34th in 18:12, followed by Zach Mosbach 42nd in 18:55, Kody Sump 57th in 20:52, Cole Renken 61st in 22:27, and Zach Dodd 63rd in 23:40.

"Wind measurements had winds at 25 mph, with gusts to 40 mph," said Hankens. "Adding the heat (high 80s) to this made for difficult racing conditions.

"In spite of this, Nick, Zach, and Kody turned in outstanding performances"

In boys JV action, Calvin Conley placed 56th in 22:11, David Cook 70th in 24:16, and Derek Rupp 71st in 24:17.

Cherokee did not field a girls cross country team this season.

The Sheldon meet was moved from Tuesday to Thursday last week due to inclement weather on Tuesday.

Cherokee next runs at Hull Western Christian on Tuesday.
