Cherokee football duo on track for history

By The IHSAA

Cherokee's Tyler Jones, Keokuk's James Vandenberg, and Marshalltown's Tyler Peschong are soon to share a slice of Iowa football history, as the three quarterbacks continue to change the state's career passing charts.

This weekend the trio appears certain to join the 5,000 yard career passing club. The three constitute the most ever to join the elite arms in one season. Mason City's Brady Foster and Dike-New Hartford's Chris Grooms joined the fraternity in 2002, the only other year for a multiple entry.

Jones, only a junior, is 328 yards shy of actually the 6,000 yard plateau having gone over the 5,000 yard barrier in season opener. The 1-2 Braves entertain Sibley-Ocheyedan (2-1) Friday.

Vandenberg, who has a 62% career completion percentage, needs just 67 yards and Peschong 70 to reach the 5-K milestone. Keokuk (2-1) hosts 3-0 Centerville while Marshalltown (2-1) travels to 0-3 Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson. The trio is also heading up the ladder in career completions and career TD strikes.

The bombardiers' are chasing the all-time records of Saint Ansgar's Matt Sherman whose career performances of 6,813 yards, 77 TDs and 550 completions have lasted since 1992. The former Iowa Hawkeye standout is a member of the IHSAA Players' Hall-of-Fame.

Three other former Iowa preps have thrown for more than 6,000 yards with Harlan's Joel Osborn being the last in a career that spanned 2001-03. Seven others including Jones have eclipsed the 5-K mark.

Jones' 497 completions (on 58% accuracy) trail only Sherman and leads class 2A. He appears destined to become the career all-time Class 2A leader in yards currently held by his predecessor Korey Stephens at 5,787, and barring injury, could become the heir apparent to all three of Sherman's marks. Vandenberg is 15 completions shy of arresting the career Class 3A mark of 348 held by Osborn. Peschong needs 33 completions and 979 yards in his remaining games to assume the Class 4A lead in those categories.

Two of the state's best receivers - Cherokee's Chris Campbell and Keokuk's James Hurt - are also etching their names into the career annals.

Campbell has moved up in career receptions and yards. He is currently second overall in receptions with 179, 43 behind leader Michael Harper of Oelwein, 2003-05. He is also the all-time Class 2A leader.

He has snagged aerials for 2,297 receiving yards, currently seventh best and highest all-time among 2A receivers. He needs just 89 yards this week to move into fifth. Pleasantville's Grant McGraw, 1992-95, is the all-time leader with 3,710.

Hurt goes into the weekend career listings of 120 receptions for 1,831 yards and 23 touchdowns, each with a top 10 ranking.

The three sky-writers' career credentials follow with their overall rank in parentheses and the all-time leader in their class.
