AURELIA - When Nick Bretz was an 8th grade student in St. Louis, Missouri, he had a science teacher, Mr. Welch, that he thought was "awesome." The 8th grader didn't realize it at the time, but the seed had been planted that would eventually lead Bretz to follow Mr. Welch, who recently passed away, into a teaching career.

Nick Bretz attended Buena Vista University following his graduation, training to become a science teacher and also wrestling for the Beavers. Though he says with a smile that he "peaked as a wrestler in high school," he also says he learned a lot about himself from his college wrestling experience.

Bretz graduated from Buena Vista in the spring of 2007, and was hired for his first teaching job this fall at Aurelia High School. The young man is teaching all high school science courses - Biology, Physical Science, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Anatomy and Physiology - the last two being one semester courses.

Bretz said that he finds the atmosphere at AHS to be "relaxed," though he also stated that he is kept very busy with his schedule, and that the most difficult thing for him so far is learning to manage his time effectively.

Nick, who is single, enjoys wrestling, weight lifting, and fishing, and also likes to watch football on television. His favorite football team is the Missouri Tigers, from his home state.
