Robert J. Obbink, 70, of Cherokee, died Sept. 21, 2007 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services were held Sept. 26. at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee, with Pastor Richard Arndt officiating. Burial wasin the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cherokee. Military graveside honors were conducted by the V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post #2253.

Bob was born July 5, 1937 in Hawarden, to William and Alice (Feikema) Obbink. He graduated from Western Christian High school in Hawarden, in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1961. While serving in the Naval Reserves he also worked construction and drove trucks in the Pocahontas and Jefferson, area.

On May 7, 1961 he married Judy Hargens in Jackson, Minn. In 1961 he and Judy moved to Cherokee, where he drove truck for Fixsel Oil Company. He later took a job with the street department for the City of Cherokee. Prior to his retirement in 1988 he also worked for the Parks and Recreation Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law (Kenneth Stoneking and Joe Terry) a sister-in-law, (Carol Galvin).

He is survived by his wife, Judy; a daughter, Brenda Medick, and her husband, David, of Cherokee; two sisters-in-law, Betty Stoneking and Janice Terry, both of Cushing; a brother-in-law, Gaylen Galvin, of Holstein; and several nieces and nephews.
