Cherokee girls 3-3 in tourney

SCHALLER - The Cherokee Washington High volleyball team charted a 3-3 match record at the Sept. 22 Schaller-Crestland Volleyball Invitational here.

Cherokee beat Rockwell City-Lytton 21-10, 21-12; beat Schaller-Crestland 21-13, 21-13; lost 18-21, 16-21 to East Sac County; lost 15-21, 14-21 to rated Sioux Center; lost 19-21, 21-14, 14-16 to Storm Lake; and defeated Sioux Central 21-7, 21-19.

"We played great the first part of the day, and then I think (Friday night's) Homecoming festivities caught up with us," said Cherokee coach Sherry Miller.

Shelby Dilla led Cherokee's serving for the day with a 40-42 effort and five aces, while Kelsey Essick was 38-39 with five aces, and Shauna Drefke 38-44 and seven aces.

Lacie Drennan paced Cherokee in spiking with an 81-90 effort and 42 kills, followed by Alison Husman 64-71 and 30 kills, Jesselyn Racine 44-62 and 14 kills, and Alanna Valentine 29-34 and 10 kills.

Racine led in blocks with 16-19 and six kills, while Valentine was 10-14 and two kills, and Drennan 6-9 and four kills. Nicole Hatch led in sets with 207-210 and 65 assists. Essick led in digs with 18-19.

Drennan was named to the All-Tournament team.

Cherokee, now 22-9 in matches this season, travels to top-ranked Hull Western Christian (2A) Thursday night to face the Wolfpack who have never lost a match (or a game!) in Lakes Conference action since they entered the league 11 years ago.
