ODEBOLT - The Galva-Holstein volleyball team competed at the Maple Valley Conference Tournament on Sat. Sept. 22, and Lady Pirate coach Scott Mitchell said, "There wasn't anything good to say about the day."
Galva-Holstein, considered one of the top teams in the conference, "started the day with very little intensity and enthusiasm and finished on the same note," said Mitchell.
"We had stretches where we played okay, but were unable to sustain it. Our (lack of) mental toughness showed through with our poor serving for the day. As poorly as we played, we had opportunities to win matches, but showed no sense of urgency, and didn't make plays when we needed to."
G-H was defeated by Odebolt-Arthur in their first game of Pool Play, 21-15, 21-18, 15-12, then defeated Westwood 21-13, 22-24, 15-6.
Woodbury Central beat G-H 21-16, 19-21, 15-11, then the Lady Pirates came back to beat Whiting 21-12, 21-12. A 2-of-3 defeat by River Valley finished the Lady Pirates for the day, with RV winning 22-20, 16-21, 15-11.
Galva-Holstein served at a 90.2% clip for the day, with 24 aces; they scored 118 kills in hitting. Heather Joslin had 40 kills to lead the team, while Lindsey Joslin had 29 and Brandi Wagoner 25. Lanae Broesder had 91 assists; Lindsey Joslin 50 digs and Heather Joslin 38; Wagoner and Alilissa McGuire five blocks apiece; and Lindsey Joslin five ace seves.
Galva-Holstein takes a 15-7 overall record and 8-1 conference mark into the River Valley Tournament at Correctionville on Saturday Sept. 29.
