G-H squads also run at Denison-Schleswig
MAPLETON - The Galva-Holstein Lady Pirates finished in first place among seven teams in the girls' varsity cross country race at the Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto Invitational Meet here last week.
Galva-Holstein scored 30 points to beat second place MV/AO by 40 points. Ar-We-Va finished third, BC-IG fourth, Hinton fifth, and Westwood and West Monona did not have enough runners to qualify for the team competition.
G-H also won the JV girls race, taking first and fourth places. G-H placed fourth in the varsity boys' competition, and second in the JV boys race.
For the G-H varsity girls, Jessie Mathes finished third in 17:21; Maddy McAreavy fourth, 17:31; Breanna Mathes sixth, 17:46; Jayde Boyle seventh, 17:51; and Ashley Drey was 10th, 18:09.
Meagan Meyer (13th, 19:30) and Annie McAreavey (17th, 20:25) also ran for the G-H varsity team.
For the JV girls, Megan Schwanz finished first, in a time of 21:04; Sarah Forristal was second, in 21:10; Shelby Bennett third, 21:32; and Kirstin Wessling fourth, 21:46. Hannah Klotz also ran, finishing 10th, in 25:22. Jamee Hunt did not run, due to illness.
For the G-H varsity boys, Andrew Galvin finished in 10th place, in a time of 19:13; John Harris was 11th, in 19:28; Jamie Conlon was 15th, 20:18; Steven Galvin, 17th in 20:31; and Josh Mohr, 20th in 20:37. Nate Braselton (22nd, 21:06) and Collin Bubke (24th, 21:22) also ran for Galva-Holstein. The team scored 73 points to finish behind Ar-We-Va (30), BC-IG (56), and MV/AO (67).
The G-H JV boys scored 41 points to place second behind MV/AO, who scored 20. Isaiah Miller (3rd, 22:55), Jon Klotz (8th, 24:16), Charlie Reich (9th, 24:53), Ethan Todd (10th, 24:58), and Shelby Stevenson (11th, 25:31) ran for G-H.
The squad also competed at the Denison-Schleswig meet on Tuesday, and coach Thomas was pleased with the performance of his veteran girls' team.
Thomas said, "We ran very well, as our top five runners ran within 20 seconds of each other. All of the girls ran very well as we had a pack in both the varsity and JV races."
The Lady Pirates finished second in the team standings with 68 points, 20 points behind champion Harlan.
Individually, Jessie Mathes finished 11th, in 16:26; Breanna Mathes was 12th, in 16:31; Jayde Boyle was 14th with a time of 16:32; Ashley Drey 15th, 16:45; and Maddy MvAreavey 16th, 16:46. Meagan Meyer and Annie McAreavey also ran for Galva-Holstein.
The members of the girls JV team - Jamee Hunt, Sarah Forristal, Megan Schwanz, Shelby Bennett, Kristin Wessling and Sarah Galvin - finished 16th, 18th, 21st, 32nd, 33rd, and 35th, respectively. Hannah Klotz also ran. Olivia Lechen did not run due to an injury. The JV team finished fifth in team standings.
The Galva-Holstein boys varsity team finished 12th in the team standings, and John Harris led individuals with a time of 16:50, good for 37th place. Andrew Galvin finished 40th, in 16:52, with Josh Mohr, Jamie Conlon, and Collin Bubke rounding out the scoring. Nate Braselton also ran.
Josh Schwanz, Riley Cosgrove, Jon Klotz, Shelby Stevenson, Ethan Todd, and Charlie Reich ran in the Boys' JV race.
Coach Thomas said, "The boys are struggling a little bit at this point. Some of the boys playing football are getting beat-up a little bit, and it has affected their performance. We have some injuries to get healed as well."
Middle schoolers Austin Drey, Christian Egger, and Kate Mathes also ran, placing 4th, 8th, and 26th, respectively, among middle school runners.
