Aurelia's Bruce accounts for 3 TDs in key district win

AURELIA - Two gritty defenses pulled the plug on the explosive, normally prolific, 8-man football offenses here Friday night during Aurelia's 19-14 district victory over Remsen St. Mary's.

The big Homecoming win propelled the Bulldogs of coach Myron Radke to a sparkling 4-1 record as the Aurelia defense rose to the challenge after allowing the Hawks 14 first-quarter points, before shutting them out the rest of the way.

Keyed by the elusive running of quarterback Jon Klein, the visiting Hawks rolled to a touchdown on their first possession, capped with a four-yard run by Ryan Schorg.

However, Aurelia answered with five minutes left in the first period with a 14-yard TD run by quarterback Jared Bruce, punctuated by a successful PAT kick by Cody Pinkerton to make it 7-6 'Dogs.

RSM came right back with a seven-yard TD run by Klein, who also carried in the two-point conversion run for a 14-7 Hawk lead.

Aurelia tallied a lone TD in the second frame on a beauteous 30-yard TD pass play from Jared Bruce to brother Aaron Bruce on a gutty fourth and eight play that turned the game around and gave the Bulldogs the grit and determination to finish the job this night.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Bulldogs sealed the deal with a one-yard Jared Bruce run wth 10:51 left in the game, the PAT failing.

Jared Bruce led the Aurelia rushing attack with 25 carries for 96 yards, while Steve White lugged it 18 times for 48 yards. Bruce was 4-9 passing for 58 yards and a TD. Aaron Bruce led Aurelia receivers with four catches for 58 yrds and a TD.

Klein passed 4-9 for RSM for 58 yards and two interceptions - both by the busy Jared Bruce - who appeared to be everywhere only because he was.

Leading tacklers for the winning 'Dogs were Aaron Bruce with 14, Pinkerton 11, Zach Nixon and Anthony Fowler nine each, Nick Felten eight, Steve White seven, and Jared Bruce six.

The Bulldogs racked up 14 first downs, and the Hawks had 13.

"My hat's off to our defense," said veteran Aurelia coach Myron Radke. "Coach Peckenschneider called a great game and had the guys ready to go. We started slow, giving them two quick TDs, but then we woke up and did our job. To shut out that team for three quarters is something.

"And Jared Bruce accounted for three TDs. What else can you say about his impact? I'm very proud of this team."

Aurelia travels to Whiting Friday for another key district encounter.
