Basic Biittner: Celebrity IQ Test

Monday, October 8, 2007

On a recent newscast it was reported that Michael Vick, former NFL Quarterback, has been arrested for possession of Marijuana. The same Michael Vick who is currently the subject of suspension from his employer, the NFL, as well as in trouble with the law for his involvement in dog fighting and gambling.

Wouldn't you think that a person in Vick's situation, who is under intense scrutiny, whose every action is being monitored, who is required to submit urine tests, would refrain from using any substance which could be detected by such tests?

I would think that is not an unreasonable expectation, would you?

Just like somebody like, say, O.J. Simpson, who is also under constant surveillance for his past deeds, or past deeds that he might have done, would never write a book about how he might have committed a murder for which he's been found "not guilty." Nor would someone like that ever burst into someone's hotel room, accompanied by people he barely knows who are brandishing firearms, and demand that the occupant of that room give him some items he says belong to him. Surely something like that would never happen, would it?

Well, if you have been observing the news lately, you know that incidents like the ones I describe above, have of course taken place recently.

The overiding question I have in these two instances is : Just how stupid ARE these guys? And if it's not a lack of intelligence, should the most recent incidents,as well as all the previous legal entanglements in which mssrs. Vick and Simpson have been involved, be attributed to a total lack of self-responsibility and a very strong feeling of entitlement?

Do these two guys feel they are entitled to do whatever they choose - regardless of the law - because they are celebrities?

I don't consider Vick and Simpson to be the only members of the Entitlement Club, though. I think the continuing problems of such celebs as Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan,et al, can all be traced to exactly the same cause. They achieved fame and notoriety at a very young age and had people pandering to them, falling over them, etc. They really do feel they can do whatever they choose, regardless of the law, common sense, or other people.

Personally, I'd like to see both Simpson and Vick be defended by a small-time attorney, and when found guilty, go to prison and SHARE A CELL. After spending several months or years together, with no access to the media, I think I can pretty much predict that there will be some profound changes in their way of thinking.

A real-life "Attitude Adjustment."
