PAULLINA - The South O'Brien volleyball squad hosted Pool Play in the War Eagle Conference Tournament on Sept. 27, and got off to a rough start, dropping four straight games to Orange City Unity Christian and LeMars Gehlen.
The Wolverines started to rebound in their third match, against Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, taking one of three games, then played their best match of the night, defeating Granville Spalding 21-16, 21-23,15-11.
Against Unity Christian, Chelsie Rohrs had three kills on offense, Aphton Roberts 13 digs on defense, and the team served at a 94% clip. However, said Wolverine coach Denise Erdmann, "Unity played at a consistent level," and beat SOS, 21-11, 21-7.
The Wolverines had some hitting errors in their second match against Gehlen Catholic and it cost them, as the Jays won 21-14, 21-16. The team's serving dipped to 92.9% and Roberts had 12 digs.
In their third match, against MMC, SOS broke into the winning column for the first time all night, beating the Eagles 21-17. MMC snapped back though, taking game two by a 21-11 score, and the deciding game,15-6.
Hitting errors again caused some problems for the Wolverines, according to Erdmann. Katie Tesch had five kills for SOS and Chelsie Rohrs three. Roberts again led in digs, with 11, and Carrie Egdorf had 10.
Against Spalding, the Wolverines played excellent defense, with Roberts having 24 digs, Egdorf and Rohrs 12 apiece, and Reagan Ebel 10. Kari Wester was 11/11 serving, with two aces and Rohrs 7/7, also with two aces.
