Jared Bruce has three TDs for victorious Aurelia

AURELIA - The Aurelia Bulldogs got off to a quick start in District 3 8-man football action here on Oct. 12, rolling to a 20-0 halftime lead against Ruthven-Ayrshire. The ‘Dogs increased their lead to 28-0 in the third quarter against the winless Raiders, and wound up winning 35-13, moving their District mark to 5-0.

The Bulldogs are tied for the District lead with Harris-Lake Park, which lost its first game of the season Friday, a non-District game against another unbeaten squad, Ar-We-Va. The Bulldogs host East Greene in non-District action on Oct. 19, and the following Friday, October 26, brings a season-ending District showdown against H-LP at Lake Park.

Both teams are assured spots in the post-season playoffs, but the winner of the Oct. 26 game will be District champion and earn the right to host the first-round playoff game on Tuesday, October 30.

The Bulldogs gained 252 yards from scrimmage in Friday night’s contest. Senior QB Jared Bruce gained 91 yards rushing on 10 carries and scored three touchdowns for Aurelia.

Speedy, shifty, sophomore running back Jacob Howey, seeing increased playing time due to Alec Ohlson’s broken ankle, gained 44 yards rushing and scored a second quarter touchdown for the ‘Dogs. Bruce completed 4 of 13 pass attempts for 82 yards and a touchdown to Anthony Fowler. He also had one pass intercepted.

Fowler caught two passes for 14 yards, and Aaron Bruce was also on the receiving end of two of brother Jared’s aerials, good for 68 yards.

On defense, senior linebacker Nick Felten had 14 total tackles, junior Steve White 13, and linemen Fowler, Zach Nixon, and Aaron Bruce nine, eight, and seven, respectively.

Bruce also batted down two Ruthven-Ayrsire passes and Fowler blocked a kick. Camrin Meyer also had an interceptiion for the Bulldog defense.
