MOVILLE - Woodbury Central hung 30 points on the board in the first quarter on the way to overwhelming a banged-up Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn squad 48-0 in Class A, District 1 football action here Friday night.
The Eagles managed just 47 yards rushing on 30 carries, with Jordan Petersen netting 34 of those on six hauls, and Lukas Nelson totaling 20 yards on 10 carries.
MMC quarterback Jordan Boekhout completed 8-18 passes for 65 yards and two interceptions. Justin Henke completed 1-1 for three yards. Jerad Letsche led MMC in receiving with five catches for 28 yards, and Nelson caught one for 33 yards.
Letsche led the 1-6 Eagles on defense with six tackles, while Blaine Dammann and Derek Schlinz had five apiece.
The Wildcats opened the game by returning the kick-off for a touchdown, and also returned an interception 85 yards for TD to break off a nice drive the Eagles had going in the first quarter.
WC rushed 24 times for 60 yards, and passed 5-9 for 113 yards.
“Obviously, the score looks like we did not play well,” said MMC coach Brian Williams. “We knew going in that we needed to eliminate the big plays. We gave up several big pass plays that led to scores.
“We competed and played hard the entire game, but they are a very good team. We are looking forward to preparing for our big rivalry game against Le Mars Gehlen this week.”
That game is Oct. 19 in Marcus.
