G-H vies in tough Heelan tourney

SIOUX CITY - Playing in an awesome field of competition including Hull Western Christian (# 1 2A), Ankeny (#1 4A), Sioux Center, Sioux City North and Bellevue, Neb., the Galva-Holstein Lady Pirates competed in a volleyball tournamentat at Sioux City Heelan on Saturday.

G-H Coach Scot Mitchell said that his team “played very well most of the day,” and called the tourney “our best Saturday outing of the season.”

“There is no room for mistakes when you are playing against these quality large-school programs, “ said Mitchell. “The speed of the game is so much quicker at this level.”

In Pool Play, G-H lost to Western Christian 8-21, 14-21; Ankeny 4-21, 5-21; Bellevue West 17-21, 19-21; Sioux Center 14-21, 14-21; defeated MV/AO 21-14, 22-20; and lost to Sioux City North 21-24, 21-13, 6-15.

Sisters Heather and Lindsey Joslin led Lady Pirate hitting at the Heelan tournament with 32 and 27 kills, respectively. Lanae Broesder led G-H setters with 74 assists on the day. Lindsey Joslin had 11 ace serves, Brea Slaybaugh and Lindsey Joslin led in digs with 38 and 33, respectively, and Brooke Wiese and Victoria Andresen had four blocks apiece.

“Hopefully,” said coach Mitchell, ”playing these teams will help us in the tournament.”
